When it comes to the salaries of Nigerian bank workers or anything on how much they earn on a monthly basis, its normally shrouded in secrecy. This is a normal status quo in the banking industry where the 24 commercial banks in Nigeria battle for more customers and keeping their staff happy.

According to a GTCO employee who wished to remain anonymous due to corporate standards, “banking salaries are sacred.”

A banker at Stanbic IBTC told a reliable source, “HR makes it clear at onboarding: discussing salary with your colleagues is strictly prohibited.” All job grades are affected by this act of silence, which keeps workers from publicly comparing their salaries to those of their colleagues.

These banks, in turn, profits from this concealment. It keeps their employees from getting the knowledge they need to assess their career possibilities, comparing salaries, ask for raises, or think about switching to a competitor. Despite the fact that the industry’s high turnover rates have been increasing since remote work became popular in 2020, this lack of transparency constitutes a barrier for staff mobility.

Various Nigerian commercial banks hire and train thousands of people every year, making them an important part of Nigeria’s highest employers of labour. They also decide how much people should be paid for entry-level jobs and often increase such salaries to keep up with inflation. But because Nigeria’s inflation rate hit its highest level in 18 years, many banks had to raise their workers’ pay.

In September 2026, GTCO increased employee salaries by 40% to show that it was serious about keeping the best workers even though living costs were going up. Union Bank shockingly followed suit, greatly increasing staff salaries across the board and cementing itself as one of the highest-paying banks in the country.
